Karena Lineback

Karena Thek Lineback

Karena Thek Lineback joins us to share her expertise on using Pilates for various pathologies in the Pilates fitness setting. Whether it is osteoporosis, disc pathologies, kyphosis or scoliosis, there are conditions that stay with the client long after their physical therapy visits expire. So how do we, as Pilates Instructors, work with them when they show up in our studio? Karena's workshops give you the  knowledge to move forward confidently to create successful programs for these special populations.  Karena is the author of OsteoPilates, Increase Bone Density, Reduce Fracture Risk, Look and Feel Great! (2003), and Scolio-Pilates, Exercise for Scoliosis, a Pro-Active Guide (2011).  She is the host of the public television special, Pilates for Healthy Bodies, with a DVD by the same name and the weekly host of the Southern California AM radio talk show, Alive & Well, where topics of health, fitness and nutrition are discussed.

Scolio-Pilates: Pilates for Scoliosis and Kyphosis

For misalignments of the spine, the spine must be addressed in three-dimensions. Learn to use props to aid movement of the spine towards a neutral alignment.  Once the neutral alignment is obtained, then strengthening around this new alignment will create the lasting change that we desire for our clients.  Focus will include traction on the Pilates equipment, breathing techniques for spinal elongation/strengthening and specific Pilates exercises that accurately activate the muscles needed to change or correct the common misalignments of scoliosis and kyphosis.

OsteoPilates: Pilates For Osteoporosis

Exercise is routinely prescribed for anyone with osteoporosis in order to avoid painful, debilitating fractures. Unfortunately the prescription, exercise, can often be the very thing that creates a fracture in the first place.  This workshop begins by reviewing the anatomy and contraindications of osteoporosis.  You'll learn why specific exercises greatly reduces fracture risk even when bone density does not increase.  And finally, you will acquire the skills to create safe, effective programming for those with osteoporosis.
